Setting a New Paradigm in Interactivity at Retail

Mechtronics was selected by Bayer to partner in development of the Dr. Scholl’s Custom Fit Orthotic (CFO) Center Kiosk. The unit was designed around patented foot-mapping technology, which measures the user’s foot pressure and arch type. Integrated software analyzes these measurements and recommends one of fourteen product SKUs, which are merchandised directly from the display.

The Dr. Scholl’s CFO Center Kiosk set a new paradigm at retail: personalizing product recommendations for consumers without the need for a knowledgeable sales associate. This innovative pairing of product and technology provides the consumer with an economical alternative to a costly, custom-molded orthotic from a podiatrist’s office.


Early Stages

The initial design was conceived in 2005 and tested using foam core models, focus groups, and ergonomic studies. Alterations were made based on these tests, and the first CFO Kiosks were launched at five Meijer stores in late 2006. It was expanded to 70 stores in 2007.


Design Update

In 2008, Walmart requested a modified CFO Kiosk with a smaller footprint and a new header. The updated design was launched in 1,400 Walmart stores across the United States in the summer of 2009.

Over the past seven years, Mechtronics has provided Bayer with on-going support with design revisions, software updates, and an ongoing value-engineering program.
Most recently, the Dr. Scholl’s Kiosks have been updated with wireless connectivity. This technology allows the consumer to access Walmart’s website through the unit’s touch screen monitor and purchase an out-of-stock item. In addition, the kiosk now has the remote ability to:• Update software

• Harvest activity logsToday, the Dr. Scholl’s CFO Center Kiosk is used in over 6,000 locations across the United States and Canada. Retailers include Meijer, Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, Walgreen’s and Bed Bath and Beyond.
